Troubleshooting: Why is my round project pointy or shaped like a pentagon?

One of the most common questions I get from beginners is: "Help! I followed the pattern, but my cute round animal looks like a sharp geometric pentagon instead of a smooth sphere!"

If your 3D charm is coming out pointy, wobbly, or squarish, do not worry - you haven't necessarily made a stitching mistake. The "pentagon effect" is almost always caused by a mismatch in your materials or the size of your inner support base.

Here are the four most common culprits to check and how to fix them to get that perfect, cuddly round finish.


1. You are using Cylinder Beads (Delicas) instead of Round Rocailles

This is the number one reason projects turn out pointy!

Even if the tube says "Size 11/0," there is a massive difference between Miyuki Delicas and Miyuki Round Rocailles. Delicas are tiny, perfectly straight glass cylinders. Because they have flat, sharp edges, they lock together tightly and do not curve gently over decreases. This forces your dome to buckle into sharp angles - creating that harsh pentagon shape.

To get a smooth dome, I use Miyuki Round Rocailles, which are shaped like soft, curved doughnuts.


2. Brand Inconsistencies and Sizing Mismatches

All of my patterns are engineered and rigorously tested using the exact dimensions of Miyuki brand Size 11/0 round beads and specific inner support diameters (like 14mm or 20mm).

If you switch to a different brand (like Toho) or use irregular unbranded beads, their dimensions will be physically different.

The more inconsistent the bead sizes are, the more wobbly and warped your tension will become. If you use a different bead brand, you will almost certainly have to experiment to find your own custom inner support size because my listed measurements will no longer match your beadwork!


3. Your Inner Support is Too Small or Too Soft

If your beads are correct but your animal is still collapsing into a pointy shape, check what you are putting inside the dome:

  • Too Soft: If a pattern calls for a rigid support (like a hard spun cotton ball, wood, or acrylic bead), and you try to stuff the empty cavity with soft polyester fluff or loose cotton instead, the peyote thread will pull inward with nothing to stop it, collapsing into a sharp pentagon structure.

  • Too Small: If the pattern calls for a 20mm ball and you use an 18mm ball, the beaded "skin" will be too big for the skeleton. It will cave in on itself. The inner support must fit snugly inside to push the glass walls outward into a perfect sphere.
    ⚠️ Store-bought spun cotton balls or styrofoam balls are notoriously imprecise. A package labeled "20mm" might actually contain balls that are 18mm or 19mm. If your core is even slightly too small, the beaded "skin" will be too big for the skeleton, and it will cave in on itself. The inner support must fit snugly to push the glass walls outward. If your store-bought ball is slightly too small, you can always sculpt a custom, perfectly sized base out of clay!


💡 Secret Pro-Tip: The "Force-Shaping" Method

If you are struggling to get your beadwork to naturally curve around the inner bead smoothly, try this technique!

Instead of beading an empty, floppy dome and then dropping the structure inside at the very end, hold the inner support bead with your fingers right from the beginning.

Slide the hard acrylic or cotton ball into your starter rows very early, pinch it firmly between your thumb and index finger, and continue stitching your rows directly over it. The beadwork will naturally stretch, mold, and "force shape" itself around the structure as you pull your thread, giving you a flawless, round finish without any guesswork.
